After relocating to Bristol in the 1990s, Gianni Angelini became instrumental in shaping the Bristol Heart Institute, demonstrating resolute leadership and a deep commitment to patient care during the citys widely scrutinised Babies Scandala time marked by unusually high infant mortality in cardiac surgery.
Reflecting on that period, he says:
One of my proudest accomplishments was collaborating with a committed team to turn one of the countrys poorest-performing cardiac units into one of its finest, earning recognition both nationally and internationally.
The Bristol Heart Institute is now considered a global centre of excellence. That success was never down to one person; it was built on teamwork, shared goals, and collective resilience.
Among other notable milestones, Angelini led Cardiac Surgery at Imperial College London for six years and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2011.
In 2024, he received a lifetime achievement award from the International Society of Coronary Artery Surgery for developing an innovative heart stabilisation devicean idea sparked by watching his aunt use a sewing machine.
Now retired, Angelini has authored a memoir, A Knife to the Heart, inspired by a long conversation with his children. They wanted to understand more about my life, he explains, not just what I did, but why I chose that path. Their curiosity prompted reflection.
As a boy, he had ambitions of becoming a pilot, but a congenital eye condition prevented this. Still, his competitive drivealso evident in athleticsnever faded. Ive always had a competitive edge, he says. But that alone wasnt enough. I wanted my work to have purposeto help others and feel Id achieved something meaningful.
Inspired by pioneering surgeons such as Donald Ross and Magdi Yacoub, Angelini pursued a career in cardiac surgery, aiming to emulate their skill, courage, and vision.
Today, he serves as a role model for aspiring surgeons. His advice is clear:
Treat patients as you would want to be treated. Stay groundedhumility matters, even if it just means being less arrogant than others. Remember, youre part of a team; nothing significant is achieved alone.
Be brave. In challenging moments, dont raise your voicethat only fuels anxiety. Calmness, on the other hand, spreads just as easily.
And above all, the finest surgeons arent those who operate the most, but those who understand when surgery isnt the right course.
A Knife to the Heart: Recollections from the Blunt End of the Scalpel is published on 28 April 2026 by The Book Guild.
